Reflections: Living in a haunted house

by Belinda Brown

Created on: October 07, 2010

I once lived in a house which to me, was incredibly haunted. The whole house would be cold, like the warmth was sapped right out of it. There was the usual and odd occurrences of objects going missing and turning up in different rooms of the house, but also lights would suddenly go on during the night after they had all been switched off.

One particular and disturbing night I had spent in the house on my own found me waking up at all hours of the night to hear the television on. I got out of bed, thinking that I must have left it on and walked into the lounge room to turn it off. As I did, I heard someone knocking on the front door. I thought it was odd for someone to be knocking on my door after midnight, but I checked it out anyway. Of course, no one was there. I went back to bed, not really thinking much more of it.

I woke up again about an hour later to more knocking, this time at my bedroom door. I got up and yanked the door open to find no one there, but the lights in the kitchen and laundry on. I quickly switched the lights off then retreated back to my room, feeling rather on edge by this time. Again, I was woken up a few hours later and to me, it felt like someone was blowing gently on my face. I got up again to see the kitchen light on as well as the lounge room light. This time, I did not go back to sleep, I was terrified.

Another strange occurrence that had happened that night, and one so extraordinary that most people have a hard time believing me that this had actually happened. I have a hard time believing it myself. I awoke from a bad dream one night to hear someone stomping down the hallway. My Mom was home at the time, and I initially thought it was her. Then, my bedroom door flung open and in the dark, I could see a bulky and tall figure march up to my bed, before it leant down and screamed in my face to “get out.” Then, it marched back out the door, slamming it shut behind itself.

I was so terrified, I could not move. My Mom had woken up and marched into my room to ask me why I was slamming doors in the middle of the night. I told her what had just happened and she did not believe me, naturally, although, she did not go back to sleep that night and nor did I.

Most of the time, during the night we would hear cupboard doors slamming, the refrigerator door continuously opening so in the morning our kitchen would be flooded with water and have sour milk in the summer months.

My Mom and I have since moved out of the house. I had recently returned to the house to look at it and started chatting to my old neighbour. She had disclosed to me there had been two tenants in the house since we had moved and both of them had moved out after only a couple of months and the house is now empty. My neighbour had asked one of the tenants why she was moving and the woman had replied, “There is something very strange about this house.”

I could not agree with her more.
