The problem of animal cruelty

by Caroline Fynn

Created on: October 06, 2010

Given the fact that animal cruelty happens, and on a larger scale than most of us would like to believe, this in itself is one hell of a problem. We like to think that we live in a civilised society, and yet animal cruelty is occurring every minute of each day.

Most of us believe that we would know if a pet within our neighbourhood was being abused, however, the facts state otherwise. Take for example the little dog who was left outside Whitehall Dog Rescue Centre in Wakefield UK during the early hours of the 18th September 2010. The manager found him wrapped in a blanket and lying dead outside the shelter, he was so emaciated that every single bone in his body was apparent, his dew claws had become so overgrown that they had entered into his pads; it is one of the most appalling sights that many in the UK have ever witnessed. The staff at Whitehall felt the least they could do was to give the poor little dog a name and he has since become known as Jack. A facebook page has since been dedicated to Jack in the hope that whoever did this can be traced.

Someone knows something about how Jack came to be left at the shelter. Now, this brings us to a fundamental problem with animal cruelty, the case does not seem to be important enough to those with influence. Caring and compassionate people are angry, as angry as hell, and they want justice for Jack. For more than two weeks, members of the public have constantly bombarded the national press, the police and a number of other organisations asking for help to find whoever is responsible, and guess what? It hasn’t generated much interest, well, not yet; these people are not giving up.

This leads us to another problem, in that when the perpetrator of this heinous act is caught, then justice in the eyes of the law will be nothing more than a paltry fine, maybe a suspended sentence and a possible ban from keeping an animal for a given length of time. This is something of an atrocity, considering we do not need a licence to keep a domestic pet, therefore, how is anyone able to know if someone is not permitted to keep an animal.

One of the major problems that many of us may not be aware, is the extent of animal cruelty, we only have to look around the internet to see how many pro animal cruelty sites exist, and the amount of members these sites generate, in order to gain some idea of the size of the problem, and how utterly twisted are these “humans”. I guess we want to know the characteristics of such
