This is a touchy subject because what, exactly, is the definition of 'shallow" when it comes to a personality trait? I think when most people think of another person as shallow, it's mostly the cliches that come to mind: "He just wants sex" or "she just wants money" or "all they want are material items" etc. You know what I'm talking about. But, really, if you sit down and think hard, long, and critically about the subject of shallowness, it's all open to perspective. And, since it's all open to perspective (as are all things involved in human consciousness), I think we are all shallow to one degree or another.
When it comes to material objects, this is legitimately what makes some people extremely happy. And by material objects, I'm not only talking about jewelry or cars, I'm talking about the entire spectrum of material objects-everything from a simple hand-written letter to, perhaps, a private jet.
Women: When your guy sets up a romantic evening-cooks for you, cleans, buys you roses, gets you a box of chocolates, woos you, and writes you a letter, are you 'shallow' for being moved by these materials? Yes, there is love and passion attached to the materials, but they are materials nonetheless and these materials bring you joy.
Computer scientists: if and when the quantum computer reaches the potential you want it to reach, are you materialistically shallow for wanting this said object? No, this object literally brings you hope, happiness, accomplishment, and joy.
A few of the things I find extremely shallow and boring and subjects many individuals would find 'deep': karma, spirituality, and everything happening for a reason. Let me explain why I feel these subjects are extremely shallow.
Karma, it doesn't exist. There's not some magical energy floating around breaking one person's leg and giving another person winning lottery numbers. If karma was real, babies wouldn't be born with leukemia and murderous, tyrannical dictators like Ahmadinejad wouldn't be wealthy and powerful.
Spirituality is a phrase that is thrown around as if it's a fact, usually by individuals who don't believe in religion, but do feel there is an afterlife and god. This annoys me to no end, because there's no substantial proof for either the afterlife, spirits, or god. There is some proof of an afterlife/spirits (ghosts, near-death experiences), but there is absolutely no proof of god.
And everything happening for a reason? Are you kidding me? Have you seen the size of the universe?
