Created on: October 05, 2010

As one of the most popular terriers around, most people are quite familiar with the Boston Terrier. This breed has served as a companion for a myriad of families. Despite its popularity, the Boston Terrier maintains a rich origin and history that might remain unknown to some. Following is a detailed profile of the Boston Terrier.

Origin of the Boston Terrier

Many different dog breeds came together to create the Boston Terrier. The Bulldog, the French Bulldog, the Bull Terrier and the Boxer were all thrown into the mixture. Hence the name, the first Boston Terrier was created in Boston in the 1870’s. The breed is often described as an American dog with French and English Blood.

Description of the Boston Terrier

The breed usually reaches 15 to 17 inches in height and weighs between 15 and 25 pounds. It is best distinguished by its flattened face and wrinkles. The muzzle is short and squared and the nose is very black. The Boston Terrier has large, rounded eyes that are very dark brown. The eyes usually maintain a sweet expression. The ears are small and carried in an erect manner. The chest is broad and the limbs are straight and muscular. The Boston Terrier has very short, fine fur and sheds very minimally. This dog is brindle with white markings on the head, chest and tail.

The Boston Terrier’s Personality

The breed is quite affectionate, especially with its master. Due to its amount of patience, the Boston Terrier is usually excellent with children. This dog is also quite intelligent and alert.

Uses of the Boston Terrier

The Boston Terrier makes a wonderful companion breed because it behaves well in nearly every setting. This dog also barks quite frequently and makes an excellent guard dog. It is probably so popular in the U.S. due to its excellent character.

Overall, the Boston Terrier usually makes a good pet for families with children. If you choose to own a Boston Terrier, realize that it is best as an indoor dog. This breed is climate sensitive and might require a jacket in the winter. It should be noted that flat-faced breeds are prone to respiratory issues and do not do well in the heat. Grooming this dog is a cinch. Seeing that the Boston Terrier scarcely sheds, it only requires a light brushing every once in a while. This is an excellent breed for someone who does not want to find fur on all the furniture.
