Characters: Jimmy McCall, Erika Sellers, James and Dee McCall (Jimmy’s grandparents), Evelyn McCall (Jimmy’s mother), Devin and Winnie McCall (Jimmy’s sixteen month old twin sisters)
Scene: Denton’s Farm Market. As the curtains open, Erika is standing on a step ladder underneath an apple tree. She is holding a cloth bag and picking apples. There are two baskets next to the ladder, one of which is already full. Jimmy enters stage right with his own basket full of apples.
Jimmy: (Setting his basket down) I think our mothers have both gone mad this year!
Erika: (Laughing) I know! How many baskets have you got?
Jimmy: (Pointing) This is my fourth one. (He looked at her) Have you seen anyone else?
Erika: (Pulling two apples from the tree) You mean as in family? Not since I started. I have seen Paul and his father and Brenda and her grandparents. Brenda looked thrilled to be here.
Jimmy: I’m sure; this isn’t exactly her kind of thing.
Erika: (Handing him her bag) Can you empty this please? Brenda does it for her grandparents though. I love it. We get so much out of what we pick.
Jimmy: (Empties the bag and hands it to her) That’s another thing. Ma will be in full tilt making apple butter and jelly. She’s even going to make a bunch of apple pies and freeze them for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Erika: Mom too. She’s not making pies though. (An apple drops to the ground) Sorry, heads up. (She giggles)
Jimmy: It missed me. You watch what you’re doing, that ladder isn’t the sturdiest thing.
Erika: I won’t have far to fall, I’m fine. So you don’t enjoy this?
Jimmy: Yeah, I guess I do. I like this time of year you know. (He laughs) Duncan is making money left and right.
Erika: How so? I mean, the trees haven’t let go of that many leaves yet.
Jimmy: Some have and he’s been busy. That’s why he and Elliott aren’t here.
Erika: (Handing him the bag again) Empty please. Duncan’s made a name for himself around her these past couple of years. Everyone wants him. He’s all of ten years old and has a checking account.
Jimmy: (Hands her the bag) The basket is full Erika. (He reaches for her hand and helps her down) Easy does it.
Erika: (Facing Jimmy) Thank you sir. (She gives him a light kiss on the cheek) I hear your mom went on a date last Saturday.
Jimmy: (Surprised) How did you hear about that?
Erika: Wasn’t I supposed to know? I was a little surprised you
