How to make the most of your college experience

Created on: October 05, 2010

A college experience is priceless and can open and shut doors according to how its handled.  College is a time to ask questions and seek out new answers.  One's own quest for knowledge should include questions about career, life, self and overall purpose.  Take control of your own learning and follow some simple guidelines to make your journey more meaningful.

Learn something new

Take the opportunity to learn something that you know nothing about.  The possibilities to take a course in something unrelated to your current endeavors can be life changing and make you a more well rounded  learner.  Once a major is established students tend to stray away from taking classes outside their scope of interest.  By enrolling in a class that sounds unique, different or innovative you might find a new career or perhaps just a new perspective.

Network

College allows you to have access to people, ideas and careers that you might not have normally associated with outside the academic walls.  Being able to talk to professors that have real life experiences or go to network events that are sponsored by well known alumni are invaluable tools that can later create bridges toward your career.

Get involved

Join clubs, social groups and volunteer to learn more about yourself.  An unexplored life is dull and uninteresting.  Take the time to share yourself with others, make a difference in the life of someone else or enhance a project you believe in.  Extra curricular activities will help you to not only relieve the stress from school but also provides a way to put your energy to use.

Study

Grades from college will stay with you and possibly open and shut doors in your future.  If you plan on attending graduate school than your grades in college will matter more than ever.  Some careers such as accounting, mathematics and science professions might also ask for your college G.P.A.  Take your years in college seriously and work hard at your studies.

A few ideas are listed here that will enhance your experience in college and that will provide you with a more rounded view of the college experience.  Take the time to enjoy each day in school and seek out new experiences and make new friends.  Have fun and continue to learn something new every day.
