I have yet to read the books written by J. R. R. Tolkien and I can’t wait to do so. Although I have only seen the movies, the character that really sticks out for me every time I watch these films is Samwise Gamgee, the travelling companion and good friend of Frodo Baggins.
Sam is not a one of the many wonderfully created creatures or monsters in Lord of the rings, he’s not a master of archery, nor is he the next king.
He’s just Sam, a hobbit who helps his friend, Frodo Baggins to get that precious golden ring to its destination.
After eavesdropping on a conversation, Sam is faced with the task of accompanying Frodo on a great and important journey and he does it to the very end keeping a good head on his shoulders all the way.
There are points where Sam has to reason with Frodo and even disagree with him. There are times in the movie that Frodo is not clear headed or thinking clearly because of the effects of the ring, Sam still manages to stay with Frodo.
To the very end he is there and is prepared to take whatever comes along, including the nuisance behaviour and sneakiness of Gollum, as a result of getting that ring to the place where it needs to be destroyed.
The following is a great quote from the movie, The Two Towers. It shows what a great friend and great character Sam is.
Sam: I wonder if we'll ever be put into songs or tales.
Frodo: What?
Sam: I wonder if people will ever say, 'Let's hear about Frodo and the Ring.' And they'll say 'Yes, that's one of my favourite stories. Frodo was really courageous, wasn't he, Dad?' 'Yes, my boy, the most famousest of hobbits. And that's saying a lot.'
Frodo: You've left out one of the chief characters - Samwise the Brave. I want to hear more about Sam.
Frodo: Frodo wouldn't have got far without Sam.
Sam: Now Mr. Frodo, you shouldn't make fun; I was being serious.
Frodo: So was I.
Sam: Samwise the Brave...
This was one of the only times in the whole movie that I agreed with anything Frodo said, through the movie and mostly because of the ring, Frodo’s mood towards Sam changed a lot. First he was OK, and then he was kind of snappy and nasty but Sam put up with everything and still called Frodo, Mr. Frodo.
Frodo said he wouldn’t have got far without Sam. Frodo was absolutely right.
If this story wasn't a movie and if someone had told me the story, I would have wanted to know more about Sam too.
