Drama: An autumn romance

by Sadie Grey

Created on: October 04, 2010

Characters: Evelyn McCall, Jed Gibbons.

Scene: It is a cool autumn morning. As the curtains open Evelyn can be seen on her patio sweeping. She has been decorating the patio with flowers, pumpkins and gourds for the season. Just as she sets the broom aside, a man walks in from stage right. He is dressed in jeans and a leather jacket. Hat in hand, he approaches the patio.

Jed: Good morning Mrs. McCall.

Evelyn: (Looking a bit perplexed) A-good morning.

Jed: You may not remember me, I’m Detective Gibbons; I was here when your son was in trouble.

Evelyn: (Smiling) Of course, Detective, how are you?

Jed: I’m well and you?

Evelyn: Very well thank you. Please, come up and have some coffee. I just made a pot. I’ll be right back.

(Evelyn exits back center stage as Gibbons steps onto the patio. Looking around he sees all the autumn decorations and smiles. Evelyn returns with a tray.)

Evelyn: Here we go. Please have a seat Detective.

Jed: (Sitting) My name is Jed when I’m off duty ma’am.

Evelyn: Jed. Cream or sugar?

Jed: A bit of cream, please.

Evelyn: (Pours a cup and hands it to Jed) What can I do for you Detective-Jed?

Jed: I came by to see how Duncan was doing. He’s been on my mind lately.

Evelyn: (Taking her cup and sitting down) He’s well, thank you. He had a rough time of it for a bit afterward. A friend of ours down the street is a therapist and she worked with him some. In the end, it was her husband Duncan turned to. Daniel has been a good friend to the boys ever since their father died.

Jed: I’m glad to hear it Mrs. McCall.

Evelyn: May I ask, why was Duncan on your mind?

Jed: We just finished identifying the third child. (He cleared his throat) You know-from that room.

Evelyn: Oh dear and the parents, have they been notified?

Jed: Yes. Finally. It took some doing though. I’m not going to go into all the details but, the parents had moved. I finished up yesterday.

Evelyn: Thank God. (She looked at him seriously) It was easy for me to move on. I got my child back. It never occurred to me that you would still be working on the case.

Jed: My last case actually. I’m retiring. This week is my last.

Evelyn: Oh?

Jed: (Chuckles) I know, I’m no where near retirement age. I just realized I simply can’t do this any longer. It takes something out of you. Especially this last case.

Evelyn: And what will you do now?

Jed: I have a couple of ideas. My sister is chomping at the bit to open a coffee shop.
