Reasons why one should go to college

A college experience should provide much more than an education.  An educational system isn't worth a great deal if it teaches young people how to make a living but doesn't teach them how to make a life.  ~Author Unknown.   College can provide students with much more than just preparing for a career, it can provide the framework for a well rounded life. It is true that statistics show that individuals who attend college are more likely to have a better paying job, are more productive members of society and earn more money, these are only superficial reasons but for many the reason they attend.

College provides an education

The direct effects from attending college is the goal of attaining a degree, diploma, certificate or preparation for a trade or job.  There are numerous education settings on can choose which include vocation schools, technical schools, online college, traditional colleges with campuses, 2 year colleges and 4 year colleges. The idea of going to college provides a completion to a purpose, a piece of paper that provides proof of an obtained goal.  College also forces one to learn new ideas and study subjects one might not initially partake in.

Communication Skills

Learning to be an effective communicator is a valuable skill that is needed for any vocation and a skill that can be acquired in college.  The reason that college is an ideal setting is due to the requirements that come with obtaining a diploma.  Communications classes, group projects, leadership opportunities all provide a stage for one to develop communication skills.

Friendships for Life

Among other things attending college provides oneself with a network of friends and acquaintances that will not be forgotten. College friends connect and share their experiences for years to come.  Alumni retreats and yearly gatherings provide a way to stay connected with old friends.

A time to learn independence

For some, college is the first step of independence from the family unit.  Some students go off to college away from home, others choose to live at home.  Although many students attending college might have already passed the young adulthood stage and are older learners, the idea to have a place to grow independently from outside influences cannot be minimized.

Networking

Some Higher institutions proud themselves in connecting students with the outside world.  Alumni associations are strong and can help one connect with potential employers or business partners. Many professors work outside of the academic walls of a college and can help the top students connect with the world of work.

These are a few of the reasons why someone should attend college.  College should not be the means to an end but the beginning of a journey.
