How to save money on cat food

Nobody wants to sacrifice quality when it comes to their cat's food, and chances are your feline friend won't be too happy switching to a cheaper brand either. In these tough economic times, when the average person needs to spend conservatively to make ends meet, we should never have to choose between feeding ourselves and our pets good quality food. Luckily, with some proper planning it is possible to save a great deal of money on cat food, even the name brand food your cat loves. There are a few different ways to make sure your cat always gets the best food without putting you in the poorhouse.

Coupons

Local newspapers, sales advertisements, and even the internet are a treasure trove for great money-saving coupons. The internet is especially useful for this because doing a quick search on Google or on the website of your cat's preferred food can usually find you a coupon for the exact product you need. Scour the advertisements of your local stores and see if there are any special offers, and check which stores have the lowest regular price on your cat's food to make your coupon price even lower.

Buy in Bulk

While the thought of buying a humongous bag of food at once might be daunting, it is one of the best things you can do to save money on your cat's food. Like almost anything else, buying in bulk is often the best value for your dollar, and will save you some trips to buy more because it will last for a while. Try buying the biggest bag available of your cat's dry food and store it in a large plastic container, or if your cat indulges in canned food see if they have large variety cases that are a discount compared to individual cans.

Reasonable Portions

Check with your vet to see how much food you should be giving your cat in a portion, and make sure the amount you are giving them isn't too much. Many cat owners simply fill a large bowl with food and refill it every time it empties. For many cats this leads to overeating, and is bad for both the cat and the owner's wallet. Feeding your cat a perfect healthy portion of food is a great way to conserve money and keep your kitty in top shape.

Scrimping and saving in today's economy is the only way to get by, but following these steps you can still buy your cat his favorite food while being economically conscious. Use the extra money you save to buy some catnip and fun toys, and enjoy the feeling of being a smart and savvy cat owner.
