Poetry: As October begins

THIS OCTOBER DAWNING

The hills glisten and glitter in ruby and gold

as the first of October this morning unfolds.

September left on a note so forlorn

as flooding rain on gray wings was borne…

But this morning dawned with a silver haze

on this early October day.

The rain has passed.  The day is new.

The storm now at rest, the sky turns blue.

Butterflies dance on chrysanthemums

while among golden-rod the bees buzz and hum.

Seek the last bit of nectar to get their fill.

The breeze smells of apples and the air is chilled.

The pumpkins are carnelian and apples are red.

The wood pile is waiting to be stacked in the shed.

It won’t be long until autumn is over

but it’s a wonderful day this dawning of October.

The storm now is passed and there is a high sky

but soon now the geese and the leaves will both fly.

Soon fields will be fallow and trees will be barren

but now is harvest time and a time meant for sharing

The bounty, the plenty, the blessings from God,

nature’s gifts ripened and up from the sod;

The fruit of the earth; reward for our labor;

blessing of the season, dawn of October.
