Under the cloak of darkness, the
Menorah gently casts her light,
the shamash standing high amid
the flickering flames of hope and promise.
For eight days and eight nights,
in times long past, scriptures proclaim of
a flame without fuel with which to burn,
shining bright in victory’s name.
God sent the Jews a miracle,
so tradition now dictates that
for eight days in succession,
they must prayers in his name.
Each night they light a candle,
incremental to the left,
each one a token of their faith,
each individually blessed.

Burning so bright

Of so long ago
Judah
Eight nights
to light the menorah
play the dreidel
eat the latkes.
Eight nights
festival of lights
candles burning
beating back
Two for the first night, three for the second,
light the candles, four for the third!
