Poetry: Respect

by Daryn Davies

Created on: October 02, 2010

The illiterate boys huddled around the table

For it was snap time for those who toiled

A complete generation who were never able

As their lofty ambitions were uniformly foiled

The room fills with stories of high heroism

As each individual recounts his finest deed

But we treat such yarns with great scepticism

As uttered by the lips of those who cannot read

Reverence and respect for their families is innate

Their underlying duty and steadfastness without doubt

As the hammer relentlessly smashes the steadfast slate

It would be foolish to call this boy a foolish lout.
