How to become an eco-friendly, green parent

Becoming an eco-friendly, green parent is quite easy however it is better if this process is integrated gradually into your life and that of your family. Instead of totally overhauling your life in just one day, try to introduce new activities each day so that your children will come to realize that helping the environment is just a way of life to them.

From a young age, children should be encouraged to go green. Parents can give various examples to their children simply by their actions. It is the little actions which are most effective to children for to teach them by showing them big gestures will probably not make as lasting an impression on them.

Things which parents can do to become green parents are various. They can switch off the lights every time they go out of a room so that no energy is wasted. Instead of using normal light bulbs, energy saving light bulbs can be used which will save a lot of energy and are much more cost effective too. Instead of leaving electrical appliances on standby, they should be switched off every time they are not in use for to leave them on stand by, appliances will still be using energy.

For those who still have young children, nowadays it is easier for parents to use eco-friendly baby products. Until some time ago finding natural products was quite hard and since they were only sold in specialty shops, they cost a lot of money. Since environment friendly products such as eco-friendly diapers and baby products are now more easily available, they cost much less and are easier to find in shops.

Instead of buying new furniture and clothes for their children, parents can use more hand me downs. Cleaning products can be made from ingredients found around the house such as vinegar and baking soda. These will only cost a little money and are very environmentally friendly.

The car can be used to travel long distances however for short distances try to walk. Parents can take their children with them and everyone can benefit from the brisk exercise. If the journey is to be through streets in which not much traffic pass, parents can take their children on their bicycles, making the trip seem like an adventure.

Parents can teach their children how to recycle. Metal, paper, plastic and glass can all be separated and taken to the appropriate recycling bins. This will lessen the bulk from rubbish dumps and the recycled material can instead be used to make other things like pencils, pens, newspapers and magazines.
