It's hard to quit smoking. Unbelievably hard. Many studies have shown that nicotine addiction is more difficult to break than heroin or cocaine. But, just like illegal street drugs, there are many reasons to quit.
*Health:
Your health is the most obvious reason to quit. On average, smokers die 22 years younger than smokers. Though cancer is often cited as the deadly killer, an all too early death is caused by many other diseases. Emphysema, COPD, and heart disease are all worsened with each puff you take. Even if you never suffer from any of these deadly diseases, you'll still be affected. Smokers are less effective at working out, get tired faster, and their bodies take longer to heal.
*Money:
In the USA and many other countries, heavy taxes have been placed on cigarettes and other tobacco sales. In Minnesota, one pack of cigarette costs approximately $5.50. A two pack a day smoker will spend over $4000/year on their habit. You may also be able to lower your health insurance premiums if you're able to list yourself as a non-smoker.
*Your Family:
Children of smokers are also more likely to take up the habit in their pre-teen or teenage years. Maybe they're emulating you but, more likely, they'll see it as an acceptable behavior and ignore the health risks. Even if they never pick up a cigarette, children are at an increased health risk when exposed to second-hand smoke. Bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, and ear infections are all more likely. Smoking while pregnant is even more hazardous to the child who experiences a higher likelihood of birth defects and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
*Appearance:
Cigarette smoking can affect your appearance in many ways. Because of the puffing action that happens when you smoke, you're more likely to develop wrinkles around the lips and eyes faster than a non-smoker. Teeth and fingernails often turn yellow after years of smoking and many smokers have bad breath.
*Your Social Life:
Only 20% of the population currently smokes. If you're still looking for a romantic partner, you'll have fewer options. Many non-smokers refuse to date or, even, befriend smokers.
*Freedom:
Once you've passed the time when the craving for a cigarette is constantly in your mind, you'll no longer constantly be wondering when you'll get your next fix. Many cities have recently passed no-smoking bans in restaurants, bars, and other private businesses. Relaxing at your table and chatting to your companions is much nicer than shivering outside in the winter while you take a few puffs.
Though quitting smoking is difficult, it is possible. Many people do it every day. Nicotine replacement therapies, such as patches or gums, can help make the transition slightly easier. The initial discomfort is worth the rewards.
