Reflections: Living in a haunted house

There is a friendly neighborhood ghost living in our house.  He has been in residence for quite a while.  Over the years we have had more strange, unexplained occurrences than we can count.  We aren’t scared in our home; whenever something really weird happens we just smile and say “friendly neighborhood ghost.”

Our house is not old or spooky.  It was only three years old when we bought it.  It is located in a subdivision that once was old farmland.  We never thought about the place being haunted, and for a while we had no inkling of that being so. There seems to be no haunted history attached to the house or the area.

But strange things began to happen.  My husband was working the night shift at the time and I was home alone with our two year old son. I was watching TV while he was playing on the floor nearby.  Suddenly the door to his bedroom started banging back and forth.  All the windows were closed and there was no draft in the house.  I grabbed the baby and ran out the back door to the neighbor’s house.  He came and searched the whole house and found nothing.  That made me nervous, but there was more to come.

We started hearing bumping noises in the house, like something had fallen from a closet shelf.  When we investigated, there was nothing amiss.  Lights started blinking for no reason and the TV would turn itself off.  We didn’t pay a lot of attention to these things at first.

In our bathroom we had two swag lights hanging above the vanity.  The light bulbs were enclosed in glass globes that were held into the fixture by set screws.  Several times we went to visit my parents for the day and returned to find one or both of these globes mysteriously lying on the floor.  Somehow they had gotten unscrewed and fell onto the countertop and dropped onto the floor without breaking!   There was never anyone home when this happened and the house was locked tight when we returned just as it was when we left.   After a while we got tired of putting the globes back in place and replaced the light.

Once we went out of town for the day and returned about eleven o’clock that night to find every light in the house on.  Even the light in the utility room was glowing brightly.  We had not left the lights on.  Suspecting a break-in, we rushed in only to find the house
