New Ways To Stay The Same
For any Football enthusiast, such as myself, the sport offers up a huge adrenaline rush. But, it's much more than the action, the hits, the glory, the roaring of the crowd in a homage to the gladiators of ancient Rome. It is a birthright for most like me. Echoes of my Grandfather yelling and cheering, fifty years passed. My Father, taking me to games since I was old enough to walk. A look and feel of actual greatness. Something bigger than you. Something to look forward to.
In todays game, unfortunately, all that has seemingly disappeared. You're lucky to see a player give his total all in any game, even the Superbowl. With the bright lights, commercial spots and start-up companies, looking to mold a legacy from one flashy play, it all seems lost. To look through the individual teams and their respective players, only a few names stand out to me as 'great'.
One is, without a doubt, Brett Favre. Of course greatness in any person, much less an athlete, is an open line of discussion. Some say "retire" while others are proud to have such a humble warrior refusing to stop doing what he loves. The game of Football was created with players like Brett Favre in mind. With a consecutive game streak of 237, Brett Farve is a throwback to when Football was truly a Gladiator sport. Every game film that repeats on sports network shows worldwide, will always show Brett's face along side such greats as Johnny Unitas, Kenny Stabler, Joe Namath and many, many others who were standouts and fan favorites.
But, forget the one in a million toughness of this humble hero. Brett Farve, is simply an outstanding Football player. With 3,000 yards passing in consecutive seasons, and most all together. Only one of two Quarterbacks in NFL history to have thrown 400 touchdown passes, with 413. (Dan Marino, 420) With over 25,000 passing yards, just at Lambeau Field, Brett Favre is an automatic Hall of Famer. Did I fail to mention a Superbowl ring? The truth is, Brett Favre doesn't need this game. This game needs Brett Favre.
As time passes, we see other players take the field and plead desperately for them to excite us with their skill, and in the case of a chosen few, their invincibility. The camera pans over on game-day and always seems to give you a shot of Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, true legends in the making, if not already. But, let us not forget the kind of players that keep this game going, while they're still playing. Brett Favre is the prototype for what an NFL Quarterback should be. A ton of skill, a seemingly unbreakable body and will and an unrivaled passion for the game he loves. Go get 'em, Brett.
