Personality traits necessary for success in self-employment

"Do what you love and the money will follow" is a nice sentiment if one understands it. Necessary traits include persistence, perseverance, passion for what you do, business education, the ability to learn and the ability to think on your feet. This is your road map to success.

PERSISTENCE means you keep trying new things, ways or objectives, etc. This is about focus and planning.

PERSEVERANCE means picking yourself up off the floor of despair and disappointment and plodding on again. It also involves a belief in a viable product or service.

PASSION means that you live, eat and breathe your product or service. It is important to balance the passion with rest, other recreation, chores and relationships. Any other passion has to be related and has to take a back seat or it has to go. This is about focus and expertise. You believe in this passion whole-heartedly and believe others want this service or product.

BUSINESS EDUCATION means knowing the technical or business side of marketing and managing your service or product. Forms, fees, business names (anything other than your actual name requires a business name okay'd by the government in the U.S.A.), permits, licenses, required insurances, bookkeeping, etc. This is not as hard as it seems. It's just tedious and it benefits the entrepreneur to have this knowledge before starting the business. Running a business is, at first, hectic enough without having to learn basic business tasks on the fly.

ABILITY TO LEARN AND THINK ON YOUR FEET isn't as simple as it sounds. It requires an open mind with discipline and a good foundation of general and specific industry knowledge.

Persistence, Perseverance, Passion, Education and a sharp mind are a package deal. If one has all of these, then it's not as difficult for one or more of these to partially compensate for weakness in one of them. This is your road map to success.
