Jump into Ruby on Rails

You will want to have a MySQL database and a web-server installed before you start developing Ruby on Rails. You should be comfortable installing, configuring, maintaining, and working with both before you start installing and developing Ruby on Rails.

• MySQL http://www.MySQL.org
• Apache http://www.apache.org

The Ruby on Rails portal is found online at

http://www.RubyOnRails.org. It is the best resource to find books, tutorials, local meetings, seminars, and help in regards to Ruby on Rails.

You may also want to print out the infamous Ruby on Rails CheatSheets. They are extremely useful and can be found online at the following websites:

The following basic steps will get you started with Ruby on Rails.

1. Install Ruby. You can download Ruby from http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/downloads/

2. Install RubyGems. You can download it from http://docs.rubygems.org/

3. Put your Ruby on Rails. http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/pages/GemRails

4. Make your first Ruby on Rails Application with any of the online tutorials found at http://www.rubyonrails.org/docs

Rolling with Ruby on Rails is a great tutorial to start with. It can be found online at http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/2005/01/20/rails. html.

Experienced web developers and software engineers are usually able to complete their first Ruby on Rails application within 1 to 4 days. Most of the books found at RubyOnRails.org will also help a developer to get their first Ruby on Rails application completed within a few days.
