Schools teach evolution because its true. That's the simple answer. If it weren't true it wouldn't be science and schools would teach something else instead.
Of course this illustrates the nature of the issue at hand. It's obvious that there is a discrepancy between what fundamentalists want and what is really good, rational and true science. Creationism and its ugly offspring, intelligent design, are signs that we still have a long way to go in educating our children and grandchildren about the real world and how it came to be.
The real question, then, should be, why does this issue even exist? If science is true and evolution has been proven over and over again, why do some loud mouthed fanatics still insist on substituting their lame religion for real science? Well, the answer is simple. They don't want us to teach real science. They think that devotion to an archaic God is more important than true science and will go to extremes to hold on to their outdated and ridiculous beliefs. Ignorance, to them, is a virtue and that means that science is perceived as a threat since it insists on facts and hard evidence.
Ignorance, however, is tyranny since it chains you to behaviors and beliefs that have absolutely no value in a modern world. It stunts your psychological growth and distorts your perception of the world including the truth about evolution.
So, in short, evolution should continue to be taught and we should resist all attempts by religious fundamentalists to eliminate it by continuously focusing on facts, reality and hard evidence. Eventually truth will win and we will be able to pass on to our children and grandchildren a world firmly rooted in reality instead of myth and superstition.
