Poetry: Adoption

For Our Birthmother

Dear birthmother of our little one,
The gift you have given is second to none
A beautiful child to become our own
And give new meaning to our home.

We'll cherish her always and tell her the truth
Of her birthmother's courage, still in your youth,
By making a life-changing sacrifice
To give another family life.

We promise not to let you down,
To love her always as our own,
To help her grow assured and strong
And certain she'll always belong.

We'll help her to crawl and walk and run
And give her a change to have lots of fun
With uncles and aunts and lots of cousins
And neighborhood friends dozens and dozens!

We'll teach her of God and His great love
And help her to learn of things above
Like joy and peace and eternal life
And guide her to choose the things that are right.

Someday she'll ask us about her birthmother
And how she came to be loved by another.
We'll tell her of you how she can be proud
Of the kindness and generous love that you showed.

Thank you, birthmother. How can we say
Enough to convey what we're feeling today,
As we begin our new parenting?
Please know you have done a most wonderful thing.
