And here I thought Canada was the only place with a province that wants to leave the rest of the country to form their own country. What a surprise to learn that there are people in the USA who want out.
This discussion has been going on in Canada for years with the Province of Quebec wanting to form their own country. Right now Quebec basically runs the entire country anyway so I don't know why they want out. Over the last 25 years plus the vast majority of Canada's Prime Ministers have come out of Quebec. The majority of top officials in government are from Quebec. Ever hear of the tail wagging the dog? That's what goes on in Canada. Do I want Quebec to leave? No way. It's part of my country and love it or hate it, I definitely want Quebec to stay.
Now in Vermont's case, I have a question. Are you people crazy? What's the problem? You don't like the political system in the USA? Do you vote? Do you take part in politics? Because if you don't go to the polls and vote, then you have absolutely no right to complain. How will Vermont survive if it is successful and leaves the USA? What will its currency be? Does it expect the rest of the country to bale them out and defend them when they need it? Ya can't have it both ways.
There's an old saying - 'the more things change, the more they stay the same'. Will it really make Vermont or Quebec better places to live in if they go on their own? Somehow I doubt it. Both Canada and the USA have good points and the majority of citizens in both countries are happy that they live there. Believe me when I say that there are things and people in Canada who drive me crazy but it is outweighed by the many benefits of living here.
I will do all that is necessary to keep Quebec as part of the country of Canada and I feel confident that there are Americans who feel just as strongly as I do about keeping their country together. Both Vermont and Quebec should be aware that the 'divorce' they want won't come easy. Don't expect spousal support, etc. and yes, we'll fight you for the 'house' (all federal buildings), the 'cottage' (all federal parks) and anything else that is currently funded mainly by the federal government in both countries. Hope you have a good 'divorce' lawyer.
