Why Twitter is preferable to Facebook, Nexopia or MySpace

Celebrities such as Martha Stewart and Bill Gates seem to prefer Twitter above FaceBook. Bill Gates said that he had to abandon Facebook because he had 10, 000 people waiting to be his friends. Martha Stewart had the following to say about Facebook on the site Mashable:

“I just love it so much more than Facebook … First of all, you don’t have to spend any time on it, and, second of all, you reach a lot more people. And I don’t have to ‘befriend’ and do all that other dippy stuff that they do on Facebook.”

It makes sense that celebrities would prefer Twitter over Facebook or MySpace. Their “message” or brand image can be spread much further and effective on Twitter. People come looking for them, not the other way around.

But not all of us are an ex-president or media mogul. Why would the average person on the street, or in front of the computer(!) think that Twitter is preferable to Facebook, Nexopia or MySpace?

Twitter has less clutter
No advertisements, games and invitations to group meeting from people that you hardly know. And no long boring messages from friends.  Just a message of 140 characters or less. Believe me, you cut out the fluff if you have only 140 characters to work with.

You can send direct messages from your cell phone
Writing a text message is very similar to sending out a tweet. If your cell phone has Internet access, you can send a direct message to anybody you follow on Twitter.

With Twitter you can talk with all your followers at the same time. Just send out a tweet! You do not have to go everybody’s page to post on their wall. One message is all it takes to share and connect with everybody at the same time.

Your friends, or rather followers, are unlimited at Twitter. You can follow anybody with a Twitter account – not need to send any requests. Also your followers are unlimited at Twitter. Who says that you can only have 5 000 friends?

Twitter is an excellent way to get a quick response from a lot of people. You need a remedy for head lice? A recipe for a chocolate meringue cake? Check if it is safe to travel to Thailand? Just ask your followers. Somebody is bound to know the answer or can send you into the right direction.

A lot of people use both Twitter as well as Facebook, Nexopia and/or MySpace. For sure there are people with valid reasons why they prefer these sites above Twitter. But in the end, nothing beats Twitter when it comes to speed and convenience. These two things we have come to expect as our right living now in the beginning of the 21st century. And Twitter delivers.
