When you believe in God, but not church

by Jac Alyn

Created on: September 29, 2010

God wants a personal relationship with you.  Yes, you.  He wants to be friends.  If you start thinking of God in this very human way it becomes easier to create that relationship with him.  The church is a vehicle to learn about him.  You cannot be friends with someone you know nothing about.  The church helps show you who God is, what he's like, what he wants.  But you don't need a church to have a relationship with God.  God is ready to be your friend at anytime.  Most people simply find it easier to learn about him and be encouraged in their friendship with him through a church.

Being God's personal friend has many, many benefits.  When you love God and want to be with him, he loves you and keeps near to you.  It is an amazing comfort to have that source of security to have someone as powerful as him on your side.  He will never break promises, or lead you astray.  He will never let you down when it comes to something important.  He is a powerful ally and wants to be with you.

John 16:33 states "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

The church, any church, is filled with people, with human errors, human emotions, human drama.  It can be frustrating or disappointing being involved a church that doesn't fit you.  It can even sometimes be detrimental to the faith you do have in God.  In this age of endless sources of information you do not need a traditional church to learn more about God.  The Bible states, "If you seek him, he will be found." -1 Chronicles 28:9   God promises that whoever desires to be his friend will find what they are looking for.  If you are having difficulties finding, or being part of a church, take comfort.  There are many ways to continue learning about him without one.

Pick up a Bible:

You don't have to dedicate yourself you reading the entire thing.  (Although that is certainly a worthy goal.)  The Bible is God's own voice helping us understand him.  You would be going right to the source to learn how to have a relationship with him.

Research him:

If that seems to heavy, start by simply Googling Bible Quotes. I often find that when you are looking for something, even if you don't know what it is, it shows up right when you need it.  You may be surprised
