ADHD and the need for a second opinion

Some children and adults alike may be receiving the benefits of psycho stimulants that are prescribed for the symptoms of ADHD, but beware of side effects and long term health risks concerning addiction, growth and mental development.

The medical profession seems all too quick to jump for the prescription quick fix.  Yes some people can focus better, but are you willing to give your child something that has so many drawbacks?  There are hospitalizations for using these drugs such as overdose, death and complications. Some of these stimulants which are amphetamines can damage the nervous and cardiovascular systems and raise blood pressure.  Complications range from liver damage, cardiac arrhythmia's, seizures, and thoughts of suicide with some of these medicines.

ADHD drugs not working for your child may indicate your need to get a second opinion to confirm the original diagnosis.  Maybe the child needs a psychologists help to cope, manage stress or anger.  Further testing may be needed to find out if they have learning disabilities or dyslexia which may be causing problems in school.  Many children with ADHD also have some form of depression or bipolar disorder which should be checked out.

If you have exhausted every resource and still find the ADHD meds not working for your child it might be time to try alternative routes.  Immense strides can be achieved just by eating a healthy diet.  Eat regularly and since kids with ADHD were found to be deficient in certain nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, zinc iron and magnesium it is even more important to eat healthy.

Did you know that simply exercising regularly can raise the neurotransmitters in the brain?  These neurotransmitters increase a positive mood and influence attention and hyperactivity.  Getting out doors and receiving sun exposure will increase the vitamin D levels responsible for mood, the immune system and so much more.

Sleep is another factor that kids with ADHD are lacking in that can have a positive effect on mood and behavior.  Haven't we all seen the tired kid that is a crying wreck in the grocery store or mall?  Set a routine so the child can wind down an hour or so before bedtime.  Don't give sodas or any food with high sugar content at least two or three hours before bed and preferably never.  Some kids will and can drink chamomile tea which has a calming effect.

There are many other alternatives to explore that will work for your child.  Just remember that you will find an answer.
