Damon Salvatore of The Vampire Diaries, a Thursday night TV series, is pretty much the polar opposite of his brother, Stefan Salvatore. He can even come off as arrogant at times. He is referred to as having sociopathic tendencies, he can be charming and almost caring one minute then the next turn angry and dangerous, in which he will show no remorse for the killings he has committed. These are only a few traits that Damon Salvatore possesses. 

He also enjoys toying with people and causing grief and pain to those around him, most of all he does this to Stefan. He is very, very powerful, unlike his brother, and usually gets what he wants with the exception of Elena. This has brought strife to many people near to him and strangers alike. A lot of viewers think that it's possible Damon learned this behavior from Katherine or he came to develop this behavior because of her abandonment. This is a very big possibility.

Damon Salvatore has become the brother you are cheering for at every turn. Whether it be to get into the tomb underground or to win over Elena Gilbert; being the exact replica of Katherine. Damon Salvatore, who was turned by Katherine and believed her to be dead, has searched for her for centuries only to find that she left him and Stefan.  

He has come to realize his affections for Elena, Stefan's girlfriend. You can obviously see these feelings passed between the two during many encounters they have in both seasons. After he threatens to turn Elena, he refers to her as "our girlfriend" in front of Stefan, which is a heads up that he has developed some type of feelings for her. Then you have the kiss on her front porch where he is kissing Katherine but believes it to be Elena.

Damon Salvatore is constantly rejected by Elena, who seems to have feelings for him but continuously denies them. Later on, Damon is rejected by Katherine. He is told that "It has always been Stefan, it will always be Stefan." Both Katherine and Elena rejected Damon with this line, bringing about the downward spiral that he is so obviously in. He is surprised when Elena asks him why he would even think she would want to kiss him back. This hurts him and sends him into a drinking frenzy.

Damon Salvatore is a caring and loving soul who is lonely and is in need of that special person. He finds that in Elena but she refuses to return these feelings. Damon is a very lovable character that has a charming side and a brooding side. You grow to love him.
