There is a logical process and several recommended procedures to go through when considering the need and benefits available through the use of devises or instruments called Hearing Aids or Assistive Listening Devices.
Regardless of the extent or type of hearing loss sustained, the most important consideration is the need of the afflicted person.A rational thought process should reveal that not all people have the same needs or hearing requirements.Someone who is a resident of a nursing home does not have the same needs as a practicing attorney.A person working for a living involving communications, such as a real estate agent does not have the same requirements for hearing accurately as does a resident of a retirement home. There is a difference between needs and wants and there is usually a big difference in costs. The vast majority of hearing aids should be acquired on a realistic "Needs" basis and not on a "Wants" basis. Especially the "Wants" or the people selling the hearing aids.Usually there is a big difference in the purchase price of anything bought on a "Wants" basis. There is always a very important reason and motivation in selling on a "Wants" basis, its called profit or commission. From a sales position the goal is always to convert "Needs to "Wants".Those most capable of accomplishing that conversion are either richer or poorer, depending on which side of the transaction you are on.
A person curious about hearing loss should always first have an examination by their medical Doctor. If they proceed beyond that experience then they should always be accompanied by the most astute buyer or skeptic they know to be tested and interviewed by anyone selling hearing aids. Anyone selling hearing aids is a sales person, regardless of their title, position, background, or whatever they think they are.Since the acquisition and use of hearing aids is a very personal and long time experience, the same considerations in establishing any long time relationship should prevail when selecting a provider for hearing aids. The same values used in hiring an attorney, medical doctor, accountant, optometrist, tax preparer, etc. Most of all honest and integrity, then experience, compassion, and reliability.Since the purchase of hearing aids can involve thousands of dollars and the prices are based on whatever the traffic will bear and competition, or lack of, the buyer, or some family member, should study the subject and most of all study the market. It takes time and effort to find the most dedicated provider with experience, the best applicable product, and the best price consistent with the best service.
