How to build an indoor fort with kids

by S J

It's a shelter from a torrential storm, a hideaway for secret friends, a bunker with a view of the enemy and a haven from homework and chores. What else could it be but a fort! A rite of passage for every child, forts are where imaginations blossom and grow.

Forts come in many shapes and sizes and include materials as minimal as a quilt thrown over a the top of a table, or as extensive as a maze of boxes, cushions and mats. They can be inside or outside, temporary or permanant. The key is in the process: just have fun!

Fortunately, little imaginations are very forgiving and don't expect perfection. So don't be intimidated by the task or expect too much of yourself. Instead, ask the kids for their ideas, set up boundaries for safety and protection, discuss appropriate building materials and start construction!

When my kids were younger they thoroughly enjoyed making "Cuddle Island" every weekend. By throwing all the couch cushions, pillows from every bed in the house, blankets and bean bags in a big pile, we were able to construct a comfortable "island" big enough for the whole family. The kids could wiggle in and around the cushions or simply rest and relax. There was never a right or wrong way to make Cuddle Island and it never failed to provide hours of pleasure.

For a more permanent structure, my daughter has stacked plastic packing tubs in the basement to form walls for her fort. Large blankets and quilts serve as a ceiling and hang over the entry for privacy.

Regardless of the materials or the structure created, take pride in the memories that you are making with your kids. Forts and childhood just go together, don't you think?
