The Apple iPod has promoted the individualistic society that we've become. It's your tunes on demand with no commercials and no scanning radio stations to find something you like. Unfortunately, when you're listening to your iPod you become separated from the rest of the world in a sense.
For example, let's say you're in your favorite dark hole of the library, studying for a chemistry test, when a nasty line of thunderstorms approach. You've been listening to The Shins new album and have no clue that a tornado warning has been issued for your area. Sure, the storm may just blow over, however your safety has been put in jeopardy and you didn't even know it!
There are other safety issues to consider, but what about your awareness of the news and what's going on in the world around you? Was you who was sitting at Starbucks sipping on a latte when Anna Nicole died listening to Britney Spears? (Who by the way shaved her head and entered rehab.) You didn't find these things out until a week later while at a party with friends who rambled on with all the details. Now if Britney and Anna are not your usual items of "need-to know" news, no problem. What about the war in Iraq or the Skippy peanut butter recall? Yep, those PBJ sandwiches you had for breakfast could have had salmonella.
Unplug your iPod a few times a day, watch the news or read it online. Turn the volume down in potential dangerous situations, like crossing the street. Heck, you may even overhear a hot girl talking about you in the supermarket.
