Courage
Last time, after the crash
I woke early each day to check the drive.
You see, from what I’ve heard,
The men in their shiny black suits come early,
Solemnly, to give their news
Before we have realized what has happened.
Those days, when there was no contact
My life ended and I had to start anew.
Checklists, were composed
Enumerating the things we must do to live.
And this time, the body count is higher
Making life harder on those of us back home.
The kids are older, they see the news of
Helicopters falling like the flies from the skies.
But this time, I can’t live to always be
Waiting on the shiny, black-coated men.
I refuse to wallow, the dark possibilities will be
Pushed away while we remember the joy in our lives.
Don’t worry, my darling
I will be a soldier just like you.

There was something I wanted to do.
Something to make me believe in myself,
something I felt
