Both my wife and I, retired elders enjoyed a wonderful holiday on the Island of St. Kitts, a tropical paradise. The Island for us was an intoxicating blend of sunlight, sea, air, white sandy beaches and verdant natural beauty. For us St. Kitts was one of the most seductive spots in the Caribbean. Our lodging was on one of the Plantation Houses turned hostel was quite comfortable with a view of the spectacular, cloud-fringed peak of Mount Liamuiga (pronounced Lee-a-mweega), a dormant volcano covered by dense tropical forest. We chose the island this year for our yearly summer vacation as the island was largely undiscovered, despite their extraordinary beauty, their remarkable history, and their unmatched charm. It offered us a rare opportunity to visit the "Secret Caribbean"
Now for a bit of geography –Saint Kitts (also known more formally as Saint Christopher Island is an Florida. It has a land area of about 68 sq. miles (168 km²), being 18 by 5 miles (29 by 8 km). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Kitts
For us St. Kitts Island remains not crowded, quiet and unspoiled with peace and tranquility in abundance. We explored the lava formations, historic plantation houses and forts tropical rainforest and seaside lagoons:
1) The island's favorite beach is at Frigate Bay, where the Atlantic and Caribbean seas are just 150m apart. The Coral Reef and Blood Bay Reef on the Caribbean side of the island offers excellent scuba diving.
2) One of the interesting historic Plantation houses is at Romney Manor. Charlestown is the charming home to the Horatio Nelson Museum.
3) A hike to Mount Liamuiga offers the exotic scenic view of flora and fauna of the rainforest when you trek to the mile-wide crater rim of this dormant volcano.
4) The history is no less rich on St. Kitts, which Christopher Columbus named St. Christopher after the patron saint of travelers, and shortened to St. Kitts. Nine forts guarded the island’s coastline, none more impressive than the massive Brimstone Hill Fortress; it is a wonderfully preserved UNESCO World Heritage Site today and well worth exploration.
5) Bird-watchers will delight in St. Kitts’ treetops, where one might spot brown boobies, magnificent frigate birds, cattle egrets, black-faced grass quits and black-whiskered vireos.
6) Deciding on where to stay will largely depend on your taste and your purse. There is a complete listing of accommodation styles, ranging from exciting and modern Hotels & Resorts; spacious and elegant Condominiums & Villas; elegant Plantation Inns gracing the green slopes; comfortable Guest Houses; Inns; and Apartments Homes. http://www.stkittstourism.kn/staying_here.html
Traveling to St. Kitts is quite easily reached from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and rest of Europe. A wide range of international scheduled airlines and charter carriers serve the island regularly. Cruise ships also visit on a regular basis with shore excursions to enjoy the island. Consult your travel agent.
