We've all seen it, whether in our own personal life or in the lives of our friends. Jill meets John, but then cheats on him with Jack, John's best friend. Now, why would she ever do such a thing? The answer is more simple than most make it out to be. First and foremost, the best friends are always together; it's just the way it is. They do everything together, from watching football on sundays to go kart racing behind the house in the woods.
As such, Jill would also be spending quite a bit of time with Jack, as she will take every moment she can with John. So, she becomes comfortable around Jack, and even begins to unconsciously flirt with him. She might take notice, but she'll rationalize it by saying it's just harmless fun. Meanwhile, John is unaware of the sub plot developing right beneath his nose. So, Jack and get Jill get far too comfortable, sometimes without even realizing it.
As a result, Jack and Jill might begin to develop feelings for each other. It's not that Jill doesn't still love John or anything, but she lets someone else into her heart, without even realizing it. And eventually one day, a hug, or a kiss, or some amount of affection will surface, and it will all be a downhill slide from there.
However, it could also be that your best friend is jealous of the "catch" you have, and is trying to steal your partner away from you. In short, your best friend might not be much of a friend at all. He will try to play the sympathetic card, and be there for your partner if you ever doing something stupid or slip up. It may not seem like it, but best friends are the most likely to stab you in the back, if you categorize someone as such without really knowing what they're fully capable of.
So what does this all add up to? Why did your partner pick your best friend? The answer is, because you let your best friend spend too much time around your girlfriend. And if you don't treat your partner right, what can you expect them to do? My advice to you is, spend time with your partner and your best friend separately, as to give either of them a chance to do something they might come to regret later.
