Among the Ruins
I walk in fields of dreams,
They are shattered and forsaken.
I have felt the fluttering of hope,
long enough to cultivate despair.
I know what love is;
such a seductive prelude to grief.
Better to be content among the ruins,
Sifting thru the ashes of memories;
Reaching for the always unattainable
is a foolish pastime.
Safer to leave my life this empty
than to dream of anything more.
