Ten ‘Not To Be Missed’ Things To Do On Lanzarote:
1. Take a ‘Grand Island Tour.’
Much of Lanzarote is accessible by car or coach and the roads are reasonable and adequately signed. As the island is fairly small it is possible for the visitor to discover a great deal of it in the space of a few days and spend the rest of the holiday soaking up the year-round sunshine at their leisure.
A full island coach tour is thoroughly recommended as it is easily possible to see all the main highlights in a day. For the tourist who does not drive, a tour like this is a must.
A round trip will allow the visitor to appreciate the best features of the island and give adequate time for photographs. A stop for lunch is often incorporated into such an outing. It is advisable to take one of these ‘Grand Island Tours’ at the very start of the holiday and then if there is somewhere you would like to devote more time to another day, you still have ample opportunity to do this before you leave.
There are also several tours available which concentrate on either the south or the north of the island for those who don’t want see everything in just a day. Some of the following points of interest can be visited as part of a one of these tours.
2. Visit Timanfaya National Park
Any visitor to the Spanish island of Lanzarote must not miss Timanfaya National park. The unique volcanic landscape is to be seen nowhere else on earth. Timanfaya is the site of a well-documented cataclysmic event, when thirty two of the island’s volcanoes erupted simultaneously. Between the years 1730-36 the central western part the island was devastated, causing the dramatic blackened scenery that has remained unchanged to this day.
As well as a coach tour through the lava fields, visitors can eat at ‘El Diablo’ restaurant and can see their food cooking with heat from the volcanic activity. This is the only place in the world where you can do this! There are also various demonstrations showing how hot it can get just a few inches below the surface of the ground.
3. Visit Jameos del Agua
Any visitor to Lanzarote must not miss the lava tunnels at Jameos del Agua (the word ‘Jameo’ means what remains of a lava tunnel when the roof has caved in.) Here you can see an auditorium, a cafe and a swimming pool which have been hewn from the rock in the north of the island. This is part of a massive tunnel, six kilometres long, known as the ‘Cueva
