The citizens of Vermont who want to succeed are being rash and hasty. Seceding is a way for them to walk away from the problem and take the easy way out. There is power in numbers, and the people of Vermont are willing to unite for a cause. They have many alternatives to seceding such as going on talk shows, writing to congress and the government officials, rallying, protesting, and writing articles in newspapers. It is great that they are trying to deal with things peacefully, but seceding is not the answer.
If Vermont does secede, their relationship with the US will never be the same again. There may be people who are ashamed of being Americans, but the U.S. is more than an empire. The U.S. is a place with lots of technology and educational resources. America is a place where you can get a great education and a great job. This may be a dark chapter in U.S. history, but there are going to be many great chapters to come. Seceding is not going to make their problems go away or resolve them. Seceding is a bitter and angry thing to do, and with 49 other states, the U.S. will not be effected much. If the people in Vermont are not happy with things in the U.S., they should make a wise choice in electing a new president in 2008 who will help get rid of a lot of hate and animosity.
Since it's only one particular group in Vermont that wants to succeed, chances are that the movement won't go through. If those people in Vermont have such a strong dislike for America, then they should really move to another country. Once they're out of the U.S., they can identify with another country, which is what they really want. In any democratic country, the majority is going to rule and the majority of people in Vermont want to stay a part of the U.S.A.
While the Free Vermont town status meeting did have some success and gained some followers, the Vermont Republic still has a long way to go. Vermont gaining independence from the United States is a radical idea, and chances are that it won't go too far. Even if Vermont does succeed from the U.S., at least they did it peacefully and without any weapons or violence at all.
