Best rock song ever...

by Matthew Keller

I vehemently debated on whether to dive into the virtual grudge match that is "best rock song ever." As I read the numerous articles on this issue, I realized that there could be no ONE best song because there is no way there is going to be agreement among the masses. But I'm sure we all knew that, just like we know that our choices are really the right ones.

In order to contribute to this endless debate, I had to define what a great rock song is to me...and me alone. When I think of a true great rock song, I picture an arena of fans all beating the air to the pounding of the bass drum as they all sing in unison. A great rock song is so infectious that your foot automatically starts mimicking a kick drum. That, well, that is rock to me. I know this definition leaves out some awesome rock songs, such as Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit," but there has to be SOMETHING to limit the list.

With that little rock utopia playing in my head, I immediately pictured the music video for "Paradise City" by Guns N' Roses. That image of a sold-out football stadium encompasses what rock really is. And no matter how many times you may have heard the song, you can't help but sing along with the chorus.

AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" seems to be another strong candidate. Mainly because you can't help but picture a arena full of black T-shirts all chanting, "THUNDER" as Angus Young taps the opening notes out in his little school boy outfit.

To limit myself for my own sanity, I will only mention one more candidate. Yet, this one even causes an argument with myself. Mainly because this particular band has been around for nearly 40 years now. But, it's the simple intro drum beat of Aerosmith's "Rag-doll" that makes me name it as a great rock song. Yes, "Walk This Way" also has the same deal, but I chose "Rag-doll" because it also marked a new beginning for the band.

I am a fan of all rock, so I appreciate any dicussion about this music.
