Why I Love to Read
I was on the verge of tears as I watched him reading that book. It was my first day of kindergarten and I still remember it to this very day. It was about halfway through the day and we were given free time. Many kids, including myself, used this time to play with the other children. Only that one kid was off all by himself on the opposite side of the room was doing something completely different.
He was just sitting on the floor with “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein. He seemed to be enjoying it immensely. I always enjoyed it when my mother would read me a story so I decided to also get a book. I grabbed the first book I came to in the pile of children’s books we had in the classroom. I walked over to where the other young boy was and sat down Indian style beside him. Opening the cover I was overcome with an emotion, that only now I realize as being overwhelmed. I thoroughly enjoyed the picture on the left side of the page, but then as I moved on to the next page I didn’t know what to think. I couldn’t read a single word. I looked at the other boy that was reading his book, watching him follow the words and turn the pages. He was hardly even looking at the pictures, and that was my favorite parts about books. I suddenly felt so stupid. It wasn’t fair! Why does he know how to read and I don’t. All I could do was look at all the pictures in the book until I got to the end. After this I took the book and placed it with all the others.
That feeling of stupidity stayed with me the whole day. I couldn’t wait to get home and ask my mom if there was something wrong with me. I didn’t waste a single second when my mom picked me up. Sitting in the car next to her I had began to cry and said, “Why don’t I know how to read yet?”
