“Daddy, can we get a kitty?”
I was asked by my daughter one day.
She and her girls were staying with us.
She waited to see what I would say.
“NO!” I resounded as inflexible as I could.
“We have no need for cats!
What are felines good for?
We don’t have mice or rats!”
Then a couple days later
Much to my dismay
I came home to furry critters
Not just one, but three!
Of course I love my daughter
And my grandkids just as well
So I learned to love those kittens
And decided not to rebel.
Then one day…
I returned home
And much to my surprise
When I looked at our three kittens
There were now two more pair of eyes.
“NO!” I resounded as inflexible as I could.

I returned home
And much to my surprise
When I looked at our five kittens
There was now one more pair of eyes.

SKETCH OF MUFFY
Incongruous though it may seem,
There is a pumpkin
Under the tree,

Kitten purrs softly
Please rub my back and trust me

Those eyes…
She looked right through me.
Sure. Sharp.
She moved in a certain way.
Slow. Sleek.
She got onto the bed,
Harry
My little Bengal tiger,
My little tabby moggy,
Your world is clear,
Even when it’s foggy.
Stalking through the house,
You are eight years old now, but I remember...
I was sitting cross-legged on the floor
Not looking for a new companion...
