“Come on,” he coaxed, “just one day. No one will ever find out.”
I pressed my lips together trying to hide a smile. The outside corner of my eyebrow shot up as I cocked my head to the left. Looking up at him through my eyelashes I saw my gaze made him nervous. He looked quickly away and just as quickly back. He wanted me to say yes, I knew it. I could read it in his eyes. He touched his face, his nose, his hair. He didn't know where to put his hands. I took a deep breath in and considered the consequences. He was right, no one would ever know. But did I trust myself to be strong enough to resist the connection between us? I almost didn’t care. I almost had no choice.
“Sure.” I finally agreed.
“When?” He lost his nervousness and took a confident step forwards.
“Right now.” I challenged.
“Right now?” He echoed.
“Right now.” I nodded.
We found a quiet little coffee shop just around the corner. The stucco on the outside of the building was painted blue and the warmth inside revealed a comfortable lounge with overstuffed easy chairs and local art for sale on the walls. We ordered our coffees and found ourselves curled up nicely in front of each other. I savoured the sweet, creamy heat and let the warmth from the cup permeate the palms of my hands.
“If you were stranded on a deserted island, what one CD would you take with you?” He was asking me. I had to think for a moment.
“Just one?”
“Just one and you have to listen to it over and over and over again.”
We joked easily and our conversation was effortless. I found out that he liked sports and in fact used to play. My eyes wandered over his shoulders and down his chest. His muscled arms were lightly outlined by his taut t-shirt. I imagined him on the football field, his muscles his shield, a warrior engaged in battle, winners and losers all fighting for glory. I imagined how much pressure he must've been under. Be stronger. Be faster. Be bigger. Score, score, score. You can't? Sorry kid, you're out; we'll take the next guy.
We talked about music, the art on the walls. We couldn't agree on one piece. A tiny watercolour
