The University of Hull was voted the UK's Friendliest University in 2006 by Friends Reunited and extends a hearty northern welcome to all new and continuing students.

The university was first established in 1927 as a college, known as University College, Hull. In 1954 a Royal Charter gave Hull the ability to become an independent university, the 14th university that was established in the United Kingdom, and the third university of Yorkshire.

The University of Hull has a campus in Hull, about two miles out of town, complete with halls of residence, and a small campus in the seaside resort of Scarborough. There are seven faculties at Hull: Arts and Social Sciences, Medicine, Health and Social Care, Postgraduate Medical Institute, Science, the Business School and the Faculty of Education.

Across both university faculties, there are around 20,000 students at Hull University, many of them international students. The university offers over 2.000 courses each year, including 400 adult education courses.

Students consistently rate Hull among the top ten mainstream UK universities, according to the National Student Surveys. Hull has a good reputation as a leading university and has received a number of research awards and nominations. Hull has grade 5 research scores in departments of politics, geography, history, law, music and English and is well known for the role it played in the development of liquid crystal displays (LCD). In 2009 the University obtained research grants totalling £35million over 439 awards.

One of the famous past employees of Hull is poet Philip Larkin who was the Hull University librarian for over 30 years. Famous and well known alumni of Hull University include John Prescott MP, former Deputy of the Labour Party, the radio presenter Jenni Murray, Sally Lindsay the Coronation Street actress and former hostage and journalist John McCarthy.

The Hull campus is located on the Humber Estuary and in some of the beautiful northern countryside. Halls of residence are located on or off campus, in modern or traditional style buildings, and meals are provided. Supermarkets, takeaways and restaurants are all within easy walking distance of the campus buildings.

Hull nightlife offers a number of discounted and free entry nights out for students.

Whatever subject you decide to study at Hull you can be sure that the educational team and your fellow students will extend a warm and hearty welcome to you and you will enjoy your stay in this vibrant, northern city.
