Did Albert Einstein suffer learning disorders

by Mary Tyrer

Created on: September 24, 2010

On March 19, 1879, Albert Einstein was born in Ulm Germany. According to the writings of Chapman and Weaver in the text Case Studies in Abnormal Behavior, (8ed.), “As a scientist, Albert Einstein was one of the most influential figures of modern time” ( 2009, p. 263). Equally, anyone who knows anything about Albert Einstein knows he is the man best famous for  his theory of relativity, the mathematical relationship that describes mass and energy. From the age of 16, Einstein showed extreme interest in physics, he would write an essay to his uncle pn the of luminferous aether.  His first version of this theory of relativity. Eventually, Albert Einstein would become one of the most renown scientist of all his time and his passion for the subject and awarded with the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922.

The story rarely hear

Albert Einstein had a wonderful mind for physics, mathematics, and science. Telling the public a man like Einstein very possibly had learning problems was hard for people to believe or understand how a man like Albert Einstein could have any learning problems whatsoever. However, that part of the story is rarely told. Not because people find it unimportant, the subject does not come up because when students are learning the importance of Albert Einstein, they are learning of  his intelligence , accomplishments, instead were always concentrating on whether or not he had a disability . Yes, one of the greatest mathematical  and scientific minds of the twentieth century very possibly had more than one learning disorder (Isaacson, 2005).  In fact, many would atest that on more than one learning disorder. Today Einstein would likely be diagnosed with Developmental Language Disorder or DLD.

The first sign that Einstein may have had  a learning problem was first  noted by his parents. Young Albert spoke only a  few words until the age of three, his parents were concerned, during that period any disorder was socially unacceptable. Therefore, his parents did their best to keep others from discovering their son was slow when it came to his speech.  His parents  feared he and his family would not become an outcast. Albert was a shy child, therefore it was easy to keep their secret. Albert did not seem to have any interests in anything particular . Of Alberts parents were neither mathematically or scientifically motivated. In elementary school Einstein did not show an interest in any subject. In
