The sheer range of television shows on offer these days is somewhat staggering!  With T.V. technology marrying with the world of Internet possibilities, you can now choose from thousands of different viewing pleasures.  Anything from slick weekly dramas to nightly comedic programs, cutting edge documentaries and lavish period costumed mini-series, all combine to offer the viewer a wide palette of worldly delights.  So what are the best shows on television?  I guess this will depend somewhat on your own personal tastes but a selection that is certainly worth a watch includes the following:

The Vampire Diaries:

After a slow start this fantasy horror series has begun attracting a devoted following. The show is based on the L. J. Smithnovels and plumbs the depths of vampire folklore with romantic subplots and exciting characters aplenty. The series has garnered several awards including a People's Choice Awards and a number of Teen Choice Awards.

True Blood:

The Alan Ball created vampire lust fest based on the popular Charlaine Harris books is a regular performer in the ratings.  The dramas of the residents from Bon Temps, a fictional town in Louisiana, has attracted a large number of avid watchers.  A fourth season of this series has recently been announced and having now won several awards and accolades, including Emmys and Golden Globes, the quality of this fine show is undisputed.

NCIS:

Naval Criminal Investigative Service is a fast paced police/crime series that continues to entertain many avid followers even after seven series.  CBS recently announced that an 8th series has been planned which should please the many devotees of the show. With a strong cast, including Mark Harmon and Pauley Perrette, this spin-off series from the popular show JAG shows no sign of ending any time soon.

Supernatural:

The Erik Kripke created series is great fare for the fright seekers and stars the incredibly popular Jared Padalecki.  The 6th season of this popular show begins in late September, 2010. With many award nominations to its credit, Supernatural has a large online fan-base who follow the news of the series with intense enthusiasm.

Bones:

This Fox Network forensic series is now heading in to its 6th series.  Starring Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz, Bones continues its run of gripping and slightly disturbing storylines, solving crimes and piecing together the clues to solve baffling murders and other forensic based mysteries.   

Other great shows:

The above list represents five of the best shows being televised but there are so many others that could be mentioned owing to their worldwide popularity and quality production values.  Modern Family, Grey's Anatomy, House, The Simpsons, Dexter, Gossip Girl, Glee, CSI and many others feature high on people's most popular lists.
