Poetry: If you were gone

If you were gone
My life would be so much simpler
No calling to check on you
No going to pick up your mail
No going to pick you up off the floor
No going to the store daily to fill tiny orders
Bit by bit in order to appease your need for a
Minute or two of company you seek in me.

If you were gone
I would not have to listen to story after story
Of your life and what it was like back there and beyond
Before I came into the world
Or the countless trips abroad and abreast,
Both real and imagined
With lobster thermador
And bull fights
Late at night
Over glasses of Sangria and
Plates of Paella never served.

If you were gone
I would not have to endure the short,
Snappy temperament and bitterness and
Resentment that has come to inhabit your heart
Or listen as you ponder what might have been
What should have been
Or what could have been had I not come into the world
And you stayed where you were.

If you were gone
My life would simply end.
