How to use yoga props

Although yoga relies mainly on a person’s physical and mental body, certain yoga props are available to facilitate poses.  Common yoga props are the mat, block, and strap.  Each of these props has a specific use that may be helpful when attempting a particular pose.

Mat

It may seem basic, but a good sticky mat lays the foundation for a successful yoga practice.  The mat is the most important of the yoga props, as it is used each time yoga is practiced.  The mat will prevent any slipping of the hands and feet, thus giving the student confidence and sole focus on the pose.  A mat will also provide just enough padding so that when laying or sitting on the mat, the hardness of the floor will not be a distraction.  Investing in a quality mat will provide a basis for effective yoga practice.

Block

The block is used to bring the floor closer to the student.  The yoga block is rectangular in shape, giving the option of three levels of height.  Having a block near the mat during practice is ideal, as it will be easily accessible when necessary.  A qualified yoga instructor will be able to assist in exactly how to use the block during specific poses.  Common poses that may require use of the block to bring the floor within reach of the hands are triangle pose and wide leg forward bend.  Supporting the hands with the block prevents unnecessary straining and allows the student to focus on the form of the pose.  As flexibility increases with practice, the yoga block may be used at a lower level or eventually, not at all.  The block may also be used to bring the floor closer when in seated positions if the flexibility of the hips and knees in impeding the pose.  Seated poses such as hero pose may require the use of a yoga block.

Strap

The purpose of the yoga strap is to extend the length of the arms.  Yoga straps are sturdy, as they will need to withstand being pulled.  In seated forward bend when the toes are not able to be reached, grasp a yoga strap around the soles of the feet a hold with both hands.  Additionally, a strap may be beneficial when performing overhead arm stretches as well.  Remember to also keep a strap near the mat during practice so it can be easily reached at any time.

All yoga props are available at sporting goods stores and typically studios will have them for students as well.  Do not be embarrassed to utilize yoga props, as they will make practice more comfortable and will help to improve flexibility over time.
