Best ways to be taken seriously at work

Working for a living is something that everyone needs to do and most people joining a company will have an ambition to move up the corporate ladder and be promoted as their career advances. To have the best chance of this you need to be taken seriously by work colleagues and bosses and there are a variety of things you can do to make sure this happens. The following are some of the best ways to be taken seriously at work and improve your chances of having a successful career.

Good Timekeeping

One of the first rules in being taken seriously at work is to ensure your timekeeping is good. Turning up late for work or sloping of early is not something that will impress bosses and will not get you in the good books. Everyone has the odd day where things don’t go to plan and it can make them late, although if you work late to compensate it is not something that will be held against you. However, if you constantly turn up late and show poor timekeeping abilities it is something that will be noticed. It is therefore not a practice that goes down well with bosses.

Dress Professionally

Most jobs have a dress code that is used by staff and this is certainly the case if you work in an office. It is important to make the effort to fit in with this and making sure what you wear is clean and smart will go down well. While a little individualism is not exactly a bad thing this should be kept to a minimum in terms of a work outfit and is more appropriate for personal rather than business dress. Dressing professionally shows that you make the effort to look the part for your job and, especially if you regularly meet customers or clients, it is an important part of being taken seriously.

Go the Extra Mile

While everyone is required to do the standard hours expected of them, if you put in the extra effort when it is required it is something that will be noticed. There will always be times when rush jobs need a little extra work to get them completed. If you are seen to be one of the staff members that offer to work late, take work home or work weekends to get a job finished on time, it will be something that is appreciated by bosses. Going the extra mile when it is needed is something that is noticed by bosses and while it is not something that needs to be done every time, if you regularly show the willingness to help out with extra work when needed it will help you be taken seriously.
