All the cool people are doing it. Going green, that is. The reasons stretch for miles on why someone would change one or more areas of their life to promote a greener planet. Families can make small changes in their lives that will help us all live much greener lives.

1.  Take a walk – One of the easiest ways to live green is to simply drive less. This can mean taking an evening walk rather than going out. Shopping in areas where you can walk from store rather than have to drive from store to store can save gas and prevent pollution.

2.  Watch the plastic – Take note of plastic products you can live without, like bottled water. Bottled water can be obtained by using a water filter that will even save money. Not only will you be limiting the amount of plastic water bottles in landfills.

3.  Turn it off – One of the biggest drains on power is leaving small appliances, video game systems and power charges on when not in use. These products can dramatically save energy when unplugged. This also goes for lights and fans running in rooms that aren't occupied. By encouraging children to be aware of their games and lights in their rooms, they can help live green.

4.  Watch the temperature – Check your thermostat and turn off the heater or air conditioner when it isn't needed. You might also invest in a programmable thermostat that will remember even when you don't. It can easily be set to change the temperature during the night and when the house is empty during the day.

5.  Recycle and Reuse! – The easiest and biggest way to live a green life is to recycle and reuse. It can even become a family activity. Many communities have recycling services included with the trash services. By setting aside specific materials, you can prevent them from filling the landfill and give them a very productive second life. For areas without pickup services, there are usually locations to drop off your recyclables. The other option is to look for products made from recycled materials. Many companies are investing in making products out of the items that you recycle. You might find that the recycled version works better than the original. This includes packaging, papers, pencils, and just about every other item imaginable.

There you have it. Not one of these tips is time consuming or difficult, but it will allow you and your family to work together to make our planet a greener place.
