Why sports figures are failing as role models

I don't think that it is truly fair for people to say that sports figures are failing as a whole. However, when an athlete makes a major decision for the negative in his life, we all see it in the newspapers, television shows, and magazines. It's because the media tends to focus on those athletes who are out there committing crimes. After all, what sells newspapers and magazines? Scandals.

Have you ever seen Warrick Dunn on Sportscenter for building homes and helping single mothers? No, instead, we see Pacman Jones throwing money at a stripper or Ben Roethlisberger crashing his motorcycle while not wearing a helmet. In fact, the only time we see athletes in a truly positive light are when the "United Way" commercials come on your television.

So, no, it's not the athletes' fault that they are bad role models, it's the combined fault of us and the media for focusing on those negative role models.
