Sick of celebrities: Will there be a backlash against the beautiful people?

In my opinion the backlash that should happen probably never will. We, as a society, are fascinated by the celebrities we have shoved in our face on a regular basis. I remember a time, so long ago, when MTV and VH1 were all about music. Just videos and relevant music news. Then along came the explosion of reality TV which destroyed it all. And just when you were sick of the semi-celebrities manufactured by the likes of The Real World and Road Rules, VH1 stepped it up and introduced us to the even more apathetic Celeb-reality shows. Channels like E! already overwhelm our senses with an endless stream of celebrity related material. That's quite all right in their case because that is what their channel was originally geared towards. Musicians are celebrities as well, but not in the same vein as television and movie stars. Try convincing MTV and VH1 of that. We have little packets of distributed half truths called tabloid papers that circulate the ugly side of celebrity while E! often focuses on the more positive side.

Personally I could really give a hoot if Lindsay Lohan is in rehab again or if Britney Spears went loony and shaved her head. If you ask me the worse celebrity mishap that has happened in the past twenty years was the death of the beloved Princess Diana. There will always exist a celebrity that rises above all and has a positive impact on the world. Princess Diana was one of them. She used her fame to help her in all the just causes she supported and believed in. How often do you ever hear of a celebrity today involving themselves with a charitable cause where the motivation isn't shameless self promotion?

The whole thing all boils down to our inane desire to see the high and mighty fall. We, as a whole take great pleasure in witnessing these events because we view it as a justifiable punishment for them being so high and aloof whilst we struggle through our day to day existence. It also serves to put things into perspective and to remind us all that no matter what our station in life is, everybody can fall from grace.
