For a person who has just downloaded and installed Ubuntu, a Linux distribution, it can be hard to find the right applications for every day use. Just like with Microsoft Windows, there are thousands, if not millions of programs out there that a user can install. From Internet browsers to music and media players, there's tons of customization possibilities out there.

Sure Ubuntu comes with some great programs and applications to begin with, like GIMP and FireFox, but not everyone wants to use those great programs. Of course it is possible to use Windows only programs in Ubuntu through the use of WINE and by other means, but what are the best programs for Ubuntu users.

FireFox - Google Chromium

One of these Internet browsers may come with later versions of Ubuntu, but both are power houses. FireFox is included with most later versions of Ubuntu, and is great for fast Internet browsing. There are many advanced features of FireFox, such as plug ins that can important features to this amazing browser.

On the other hand Chromium is backed by Google, and is also extremely fast yet secure. Both browsers have quite large fan bases of people that will swear one or the other is better. A suggestion would be to start out with using FireFox since it comes with Ubuntu, then do a bit of research into Chromium.

Pidgin Instant Messenger

Ever dream of being able to use MSN Messenger, AIM, XFire, and other instant messengers in the same program? With Pidgin this is no longer just a dream, and users can chat with friends from many different messaging programs at the same time without using up too many system resources.

WINE

For Ubuntu users installing Windows set up files is impossible, or was until WINE and other programs were developed. WINE allows for users to install and use Windows games and programs, which is essential for those who worry about Ubuntu compatibility issues.

There are other programs that turn out to be similar to WINE or attempt at doing the same type of functions. PlayOnLinux if one of those programs but doesn't seem to have the type of support WINE does. Compatibility lists for WINE are posted on the projects website, along with instructions on how to fix problems.

Ubuntu Tweak

As an Ubuntu user, customizing and tweaking everything within the operating system shouldn't be too unbelievable. Ubuntu Tweak is one of those programs that helps users do so in an organized manner. Everything from changing desktop options to otherwise hidden options for the log in screen are easily available.

Ubuntu Tweak is probably one of the best applications released for Ubuntu, and is a must have for any user who wants to play around with their PC's options. Aside from customization, Ubuntu Tweak can also help users clean their computer of unwanted files.

So there you have it, some of the best applications for Ubuntu. In the coming years it is likely the community for Ubuntu will continue to grow and new programs will be created. Next time a friend crashes their Windows PC, tell them all about Ubuntu and how to install it, they'll thank you.
