"I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate, John Edwards, but it turns out that you have to go into rehab if you use the word 'f*gg*t,' so I'm - so, kind of at an impasse, can't really talk about Edwards, so I think I'll just conclude here and take your questions," were Ann Coulter's words at the 34th Conservative Political Action Conference.
These word may me the undoing of or the spring board for John Edward's survival as a presidential candidate in the 2008 elections. Why you ask?
John Edwards trails way behind media darlings Barak and Clinton. He needs a real boost in money, exposure, interest, etc. The handling of this response will make or break Edwards bid for the Democratic nomination.
Why did Coulter single Edwards out?
Did she see him as a real threat to conservative values?
A real threat to Republican status quo once in office?
Who really knows?
Edwards' initial response was to post on his website www.johnedwards.com "Ann Coulter's use of an anti-gay slur yesterday was un-American and indefensible. In America, we strive for equality and embrace diversity. The kind of hateful language she used has no place in political debate or our society at large. I believe it is our moral responsibility to speak out against that kind of bigotry and prejudice every time we encounter it."
Coulter responded by saying it was an obvious joke. She is later to have responded in an email that it would be mean to the gay community to associate them with Edwards.
While John Edwards' initial response might be of shock and indignation. In the long run this might be the spark of public interest that would put John Edwards back on the political map. This could be true especially if the Hilary Clinton-Obama Barak feud the media is courting so much makes both candidates caricatures of Democratic infighting and feuding.
Ann Coulter is a smart lady. While many conservative may be cringing at what she said others are embracing her candor and ability to make news. And in politics making the news is making money. I am sure this little remark has boosted sales of her books and her website subscriptions to www.humaneventsonline.com.
